Biography

In Diana Maier’s almost 30-year legal career, she has been consistently recognized as an attorney and mediator of the highest caliber. She was selected as California Lawyer’s Attorney of the Month in 2021, and has been voted a Super Lawyer since 2022 for her work as a mediator and employment attorney.

A licensed attorney since 1998, Diana’s worked as an employment litigator on both sides of the aisle for over twenty years.  She also served as in-house counsel in employment and privacy law, conducted workplace investigations, and founded her own firm, Maier Law Group (MLG) in 2016, today a very successful employment law shop of the highest caliber. Diana is known for conducting highly effective mediations between litigants and even in the workplace itself, between employees or c-suite teams needing to transform their relationships. Rounding out Diana’s experience is the public office she holds in Marin County as a member of the Board of Directors of the Marin Municipal Water Board, the result of a hard-fought political campaign she won in 2024.

Diana’s background as a public defender, employment litigator (at both plaintiff and defense firms), in-house counsel, workplace investigator and elected official give her a rare ability to understand the human dynamics beneath legal and interpersonal conflict and to help parties navigate them with confidence. Diana quickly gains the trust of the parties and lawyers in a conflict and is able to move quickly toward resolution. Diana is fluent in Spanish and will mediate with Spanish-speaking parties whenever needed.

Diana also has experience mediating as a member of court panels.  She was accepted into the prestigious Northern District Court of California mediator training and became an empaneled mediator for the court in 2019.  She has also served as an empaneled mediator for the Central District Court of California, Alameda County Superior Court, Contra Costa County Superior Court, the Riverside Superior Court, and the San Mateo County Bar Association.

At Signature Resolution, Diana focuses on employment lawsuits, both single and multi-plaintiff cases. Diana also mediates workplace interpersonal conflicts between employees and executives. For example, Diana recently mediated between a founding partner and associate attorney when their relationship was at an impasse. On another occasion, Diana mediated among several company executives preparing their business for sale but conflicted on who to sell to and at what minimum price. Diana also mediates business and commercial, contract, real estate, intellectual property, landlord-tenant, and probate conflicts. Having represented both plaintiffs and defendants, Diana brings a balanced perspective that allows her to understand the pressures, motivations, and risk assessments on all sides in a dispute. Her strategic insight and clear communication help parties evaluate their options realistically and work toward durable, informed outcomes.

Diana’s career began in Washington, DC, where she worked as a foreign policy adviser for Congressman Henry Waxman and a lobbyist at a policy organization. These early roles taught Diana how to distill complex issues for varied audiences and navigate negotiations involving sensitive political and interpersonal dynamics. After law school, Diana joined the Santa Clara County Public Defender’s Office, achieving trial outcomes well above county averages and developing a deep understanding of human conflict. As a public defender, Diana worked to enact the first-ever Santa Clara County juvenile mental health court.

In 2003, Diana left criminal law and became a plaintiff’s employment attorney with Bushnell, Caplan, and Fielding. After five years of doing plaintiff’s work, she transitioned into preventative employment law and began working with employers to enact policies and procedures that made their workplaces sustainable, happy, and largely free from litigation. As part of this work, Diana began investigating employee complaints that arose, and later earned the Association of Workplace Investigators Certificate (AWI-CH), the gold standard in investigation credentials. In 2018, Diana was first trained as a mediator and began working privately and on court panels soon after. Diana’s investigative background, preventative work, and experience litigating in court from both the plaintiff and defense sides shaped her mediation practice, particularly her ability to identify core issues quickly, assess credibility, and facilitate productive dialogue among parties with competing narratives. One thing she has learned for sure: trying a case is almost always a losing proposition for both parties.

Diana is deeply committed to service and leadership. In 2024, she was elected to the Board of Directors of Marin Water, where she helps govern decisions about water supply and the use of Marin’s watershed (Mt. Tam). She remains active in many other kinds of  community work as well, such as Moms Demand Action, an anti gun-violence group, and participates in local and international service projects. The last two years she has taken her kids to do service work in Nicaragua and South Africa. She is the founder of Joy in the Law, a local movement dedicated to helping lawyers reconnect with their purpose, values, and well-being.

Known for her calm presence, balanced approach, and ability to build trust quickly, Diana helps parties resolve disputes with clarity, dignity, and lasting results.
